Statement from juror Karlota Contreras-Koterbay:

The theme for this exhibition is the Body, the governed, embattled, empowered bodies of resistance and agency. From Black Lives Matter to the aggressive assault on the Roe Vs. Wade decision or the rights for trans youth to receive care, our bodies are in a constant struggle for autonomy, equality, and self-representation. Through this exhibition, MSA and Stove Works employ the agency of art as a platform for visibility and discourse. Artists are encouraged to submit works that redefine, reinvestigate and recontextualize the body and its politics. The selection criteria favors diversity in media/perspective and innovation in a form that prompts critical dialogue, yet are inclusive, empowering, and serve as an embodiment of contemporary issues.

The exhibition features three dimensional or installation artworks that portray the human body as forms of resistance, memory, experience, and history. Body as a form of resistance includes dissent, struggle, and pain, it is persistent and unbound. Body as memory, as physical manifestations of recollection, reflection, and remembering. Body as experience, as a resolution of the will and manifestations of the imagination, elaboration of life lived. Body as history, as anatomical documents, evidence of the past, and surfaces of record for battlegrounds of battles won and lost.

Embattled strives for self representation, and visibility including work resulting from reflective discourse, self gaze, and critical commentary that moves past the simplistic, voyeuristic tradition of the female nude. It celebrates the Body in all its complex forms, clothed, stripped, naked, battered, pampered, and all variances. The Body is portrayed for its overflowing potential as vessels of time, markers of place and repository of memory.

SLEEK: THE ART OF THE HELMET

SLEEK: THE ART OF THE HELMET

  • Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

“Sleek: The Art of the Helmet” explores the racing helmet’s art and design and the stories behind the designs. The exhibition is led by guest curator and local Indianapolis creative Amiah Mims.

Helmets and their design are some of the most remarkable intersections of art and engineering. They have been and continue to be a significant part of racing history.  The exhibition includes historic helmets, helmets worn by current INDYCAR drivers, and helmets created by local artists. Some of the helmets on display include Mario Andretti’s from his 1993 season, Jimmie Johnson’s helmet from his 2012 Brickyard 400 win, and Alexander Rossi’s 2018 Indianapolis 500 helmet.

Nine of the helmets on display are designed by selected local artists. Ranging between ages 18-65 and chosen by a panel composed of Museum exhibition team members and the Indy Arts Council, artists Faith Blackwell, Justin Brown, Grant M. Brownlow, Jessica Bowman, April Knauber, Nancy Lee, Shaunt’e Lewis, Austin Polen, and Greg Potter were free to use materials, methods, and style of their choosing.

You can now bid on one of the helmets designed by the local artists. The auction is live and will close on December 11, 2022.

THE ONE DROP MISSION

Historically, the One-Drop Rule was used to segregate people of color with Black ancestry in the United States. We are reclaiming the notion and embracing our strength as a collective.

What once was used to divide us now brings us together. However our artists identify—Black, Brown, Latinx, Native, Indigenous, BIPOC—we have partnered as a collective to curate an event we hope will bring voices from the margins into the spotlight and showcase the power of unity.

This event is created and curated BY MEMBERS OF THE BIPOC COMMUNITY and designed to engage ALL PEOPLE. Come one, come all!

A portion of all sold artwork will be donated to Refuge Place Indy. An organization dedicated to helping reduce homelessness in Indianapolis and surrounding areas.

All art purchases will be processed through Cashapp: $onedropshow
